UN Fund for International Partnerships gathers UN entities globally to its Fiduciary workshop

Did you know that the word “fiduciary” comes from the Latin word “fiducia” meaning “trust”?

The United Nations Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP), a trust fund administered by the United Nations Office for Partnerships to serve as the primary interface between the UN Foundation and the UN system, hosted its first workshop on fiduciary services on 27 March.

Annemarie Hou, Executive Director of the UN Office for Partnerships gave an overview of the role of UNFIP in working together with the UN Foundation to support projects implemented globally by UN agencies and explained how crucial its work is in helping the UN system mobilize donor contributions through the UN Foundation.

To provide a better understanding of the role of the UN Foundation, Sofia Borges, Senior Vice President of the UN Foundation, started with a brief history of the Foundation when Philanthropist Ted Turner believed that the UN is indispensable in tackling global challenges.

According to Ms. Borges, “This innovative spirit is what drives our work with the UN to mobilize new ideas, resources, and constituencies for collective action, especially in accelerating action on achieving the SDGs”

Ms. Rania Ashraf, UN Relations Director at UN Foundation, together with Mr. William Kennedy, Senior Programme Officer at UNFIP, talked about the process of creating fiduciary agreements, including the types, from drafting to execution. They also provided information on relevant fees and external communications.

Two guest speakers, Ms. Jacqueline Huh, Head of External Affairs and Strategic Initiatives of the Stop TB Partnership, hosted by the UN Office of Project Services (UNOPS), and Mr. Matthew Rullo, Officer-in-Charge and Communications, Advocacy and Knowledge Management Specialist at UN Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund, shared their experiences utilizing the fiduciary services provided by the UN Foundation through UNFIP, and how they have benefitted  their campaigns and initiatives through the years.

UN offices and agencies from different parts of the globe that attended virtually include the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Health Organization (WHO), UN Habitat, UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the UN Youth Office.
