AI and Human Development
Overview
Artificial intelligence is more than a technological shift — it is reshaping how we understand ourselves, our societies, and our future. As AI systems begin to match or exceed human capabilities in some domains, they prompt deeper questions: What defines us as human, and how will human development evolve in the age of AI?
Beyond advances in innovation, AI is transforming the institutions that shape our lives — from education and governance to culture and connection. Systems driven by data, prediction, and optimization are influencing how we learn, decide, and relate to one another, raising concerns about increasingly technocratic views of human value.
This moment is not only technical, but ethical and existential. It challenges us to reflect on human identity, dignity and purpose in a rapidly changing world. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres reminds us, “Technology must be at the service of people — not the other way around.”
The AI and Human Development roundtable series creates space for global, cross-disciplinary dialogue to reflect, debate, and imagine the future we want to build together.
Vision
Lens 01 There has been a meteoric rush for AI to build prosperity from ground-breaking use cases, AI for Good to breakthroughs in science – innovation is spinning forward.
Lens 02 Keeping pace is the governance of complex risks that AI brings. In 2024, the United Nations Pact for the Future laid out shared principles, objectives and commitments for responsible AI, including building AI capacity through the Global Digital Compact, addressing critical concerns. The United Nations' Global Dialogue on AI Governance further advances these efforts by convening governments, experts, and stakeholders to foster inclusive dialogue and international cooperation on AI governance.
Lens 03 What are the implications of AI and human development. As AI becomes increasingly woven into daily life, it raises profound questions – not only about its influence on education, the workforce, and economic trends, but also on social norms, cultural values and human co-existence.
