The second UN Ocean Conference was originally scheduled to take place from 2-6 June 2020, in Lisbon, Portugal, but was postponed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, until “public health conditions allow” in 2022. On 9 September 2021, the UNGA decided that the Conference will take place in Lisbon, Portugal, from 27 June to 1 July 2022. It is co-hosted by Kenya and Portugal. The UNGA mandated the appointment of co-facilitators to lead intergovernmental consultations on the Conference declaration and finalize the organizational arrangements no later than May 2022.

The formal name of the Conference is the “2022 United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14:  Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”.
