SDG Advocates meet with UN Secretary-General

The SDG Advocates met with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York on 22 September 2019.

The Secretary-General thanked the SDG Advocates for their work, and in particular thanked the co-chairs, H.E. Nana Akufo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and H.E. Erna Solberg, for their leadership, guidance, and tireless advocacy. The Secretary-General also welcomed the new members of the group.

The Secretary-General and the Advocates discussed their ambitions for the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit, and the 74th session of the UN General Assembly. All agreed that the SDGs are the thread that runs throughout the General Assembly, and resolved to put the most vulnerable at the heart of their efforts.

The Secretary-General thanked the Advocates in advance for their advocacy throughout the General Assembly week, in particular at the SDG Action Zone, and for their ongoing efforts to drive meaningful progress for people and planet.

The SDG Advocates and the Secretary-General agreed on the need to urgently accelerate SDG action around the globe, and committed to a Decade of Action to deliver the SDGs. The Decade of Action campaign will call all stakeholders to drastically raise their ambition and take systemic, transformative action for the SDGs beginning immediately, with just ten years to go.
