Gabriela Hearst, Tracy Reese, Mara Hoffman Joined the United Nations Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network Inaugural Annual Meeting
New York, NY. – June 10, 2022 – The United Nations (UN) Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network hosted its inaugural annual meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City on June 2, 2022. Gabriela Hearst, Tracy Reese, Arizona Muse, Mara Hoffman and Patrick McDowell joined industry stakeholders, media, Governments and United Nations representatives to highlight actions, solutions, and progress from the fashion and lifestyle sectors to advance sector engagement in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals as adopted by the United Nations Member States in 2015.
Ambassador Alexander Marschik, Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations, opened the meeting calling upon the fashion industry to make a global statement by contributing to healing the planet.
Annemarie Hou, Executive Director, United Nations Office for Partnerships delivered special remarks noting: “This is a unique opportunity to learn how companies, nonprofits and media in the fashion industry are leading the shift to a future of sustainable fashion: eliminating single use plastics, expanding the use of carbon neutral fibers, championing inclusion and equality, learning about the latest trends in digital fashion, and more. The Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network represents a determined community of fashion practitioners that understand that sustainable and inclusive design is the only way forward.”
Considering the fashion and lifestyle sector’s significant impact on societies and the environment, the United Nations Conscious Fashion and Lifestyle Network Annual Meeting reviewed how the platform is fostering transparent, inclusive, and transformative engagement of global stakeholders to drive urgent action for sustainability. Its key objective is to mobilize expertise, innovation, technology, and resources towards a sustainable and inclusive COVID-19 recovery, with the Sustainable Development Goals as a guiding framework.
Network advisory committee member Fernanda Simon, Sustainability Editor, Vogue Brazil and Director, Fashion Revolution Brazil shared: “I am honored to participate in this meeting to discuss nature and innovation. I truly believe that only by learning and working in collaboration with nature that fashion and the whole global system will be sustainable.”
The meeting was co-convened by the United Nations Office for Partnerships and the Fashion Impact Fund with support from Arch & Hook, Calik Denim, Messe Frankfurt, Recover™, TENCEL™ and The LYCRA Company.
