Nadia Murad’s organization Nadia’s initiative restores basic services to Sinjar, Iraq

On February 4, Nadia’s Initiative opened a new Operating Theater and Maternity Ward in the existing Sinjar Hospital, as part of their efforts to provide emergency medical services to returnees in Sinjar, Iraq. Nadia’s Initiative is partnering with the French Government to build an entirely new hospital in Sinjar and to provide comprehensive health care to a region that has historically been overlooked when it comes to medical services. High quality equipment was provided for the Operating Theater, and training will be provided to staff.

Nadia’s Initiative works to promote the sustainable redevelopment of Sinjar, Iraq through the provision of basic services and global advocacy work to raise awareness of ISIS’s genocidal campaign against the Yazidi community. The organization’s work is designed around a comprehensive peacebuilding approach, which supports grassroots development: local solutions to local problems. The work focuses on six key priority areas linked to Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well Being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

On January 29, Nadia’s Initiative completed a new primary school in Bahrava village, Sinjar. The previous school was built with mud walls that were destroyed during the 2014 ISIS attacks. This new, fully-functioning and equipped learning space is now able to serve 150 children from Bahrava village and the surrounding areas.

The rebuilding of schools is part of Nadia’s Initiative’s efforts to enable displaced Yazidi youth to return to school. Nadia's Initiative is rebuilding primary schools, primary health centers, farms, households, and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) infrastructure throughout the Sinjar region. Nadia’s Initiative works in tandem with an array of implementing partners – from the UN to local NGOs.
